Guster "Keeps it Together"

These articles have been unedited and unrevised so beware mistakes!!

Over the summer, one of the best albums this year was released. Sadly, it received little attention. That album is Keep it Together, Gusters fourth album. I didnt honestly like the new album when I first gave it a listen, but thats mainly because of how far Guster has come, musically, since their 1999 album, Lost and Gone Forever. Gusters latest effort is the most mature album of their collection offering up a string of new emotions reflecting the bands own personal experiences these past few years.

The sound of Guster is reminiscent of Barenaked Ladies or Dave Matthews Band, but what makes them so much better is the addition of the man the music industry and his fans call The Thunder God, Mr. Brian Rosenworcel, the bands multi-talented drummer. His drum mixes are unlike any thing Ive heard. His style of drumming (with his bare hands!) is simply incredible to hear and can only be surpassed by seeing him perform these audacious drum solos live. Every track off this album feels the impact of his unbelievable talent. Brians work as a writer and drummer has easily propelled Guster farther than they could have ever gone without him.

Im not saying that the group is bad without him though. Writer, guitarist and singer extrodinar Ryan Miller also adds a great flavor to the Guster taste with his thought provoking and often inspiring lyrics. I get the distinct impression that Ryan loves writing for his fans. Track after track is filled with trivia about the bands history. Adam Gardner also adds some amazing guitar solos and is, well, the pretty boy of the group attracting new female fans by the minute. Gusters newest member, added with Keep It Together, is Joe Pisapia. He contributes his writing and musical talents to several new songs, including my personal favorite, track 7 Jesus on the Radio. Guster was a good band without him, but with him, they are a great band.

In addition to their awesome albums, I must say that Guster is easily one of the most addicting bands to see live. They are constantly touring around the area. In fact, they will be coming to Columbus in late September and Cincinnati in October. My first Guster experience actually took place this past summer. I liked their music before, but the band really takes you inside their unique world and they give you an experience that few artists could ever imitate. I saw both Guster and Peter Gabriel over the summer. Gusters show, costing $40 less than Peter Gabriels show, was far more personal. By the end of the sold out concert, I felt as though I was friends with Guster rather than just another fan. This is without a doubt, Gusters strongest suit. If you were not a Guster fan before hearing them in concert, you will be after, but until that time, be sure to check out Keep It Together.
